STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE MONTH Each month, the UW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) selects its "Student-Athletes of the Month." These student-athletes are nominated by their coaches and academic advisors based on the following criteria: • Be academically eligible and in good academic standing • Have obtained an outstanding achievement or recognition in academics • Make a significant contribution to their respective team • Be actively engaged in community service SAAC members then vote on the winners at the first SAAC meeting of each month. The goal is to have each sport represented throughout the year. At the end of the year, all of the "Student-Athletes of the Month" become the nominations for the male and female Student-Athlete of the Year awards, which is awarded at the Buckinghams. HANNAH BERNER WOMEN'S TENNIS A senior from Brooklyn, N.Y., Berner is majoring in communication arts. The women's tennis team's captain, she plays No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Badgers. In addition to participating in other community service activities, she organized "Serving for Sandy," a fundraiser to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims. 28 » VARSITY MAR CH 14, 2013 ELLIOT KRAUSE MEN'S TRACK A senior from Appleton, Wis., Krause is majoring in mathematics and philosophy. He was integral to the Badgers winning the Big Ten indoor title last month and qualified for the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. Last year, Krause helped the Badgers secure the Big Ten outdoor title and was an AllAmerican at 10,000 meters. OSKAR WIKBERG MEN'S TENNIS A first-year student from Taby, Sweden, Wikberg is undecided on his major but intends to apply to the School of Business. During the fall season he posted a singles record of 15-7 and a doubles record of 11-4. His coaches say Wikberg "demonstrates hard work and dedication on and off the court and takes pride in the program."
