Furman Mens Tennis 2012-13 Alan Ferguson Assistant mens tennis coach Alan Ferguson returns for his ninth season with the Paladins after joining the staff in the fall of 2004. During his time on staff, Furman has posted a record of 121-97-1 overall and 61-14-1 in the Southern Conference. In both 2008 and 2009, Ferguson helped lead the Paladins to the Southern Conference regular season and tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In 2007, Ferguson helped coach the Paladins to some big wins. The Paladins outlasted then-33rdranked Kentucky, 4-3, with a matchclinching win by freshman Jordan Walters. Furman showed its strength once again two weeks later when it knocked off then-45th-ranked Georgia Tech. The Paladins closed out the regular season winning 10 of their final 11 matches to earn a third-place finish in the SoCon. In 2006, Ferguson helped coach the Paladins to a share of the league regular-season title, a SoCon Tournament crown and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. A native of North Little Rock, Ark., Ferguson spent six years as an assistant coach with the University of Arkansas Lady Razorbacks. At Arkansas, he was directly involved with all aspects of the program including recruiting, travel and practice. Ferguson also organized and directed the Lady Razorback tennis camps during the summer. Not only was Ferguson a part of the Lady Razorbacks sixth consecu- tive run to the NCAA Tournament in 2001, he helped Chin Bee Khoo and Maria Pavlidou become the first-ever Lady Razorback tennis players to garner All-America honors in 1999. Ferguson was honored as Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year that same season. Prior to his stint at Arkansas, Ferguson took over at his alma mater, South Carolina-Spartanburg, in 1988. He oversaw both the mens and womens tennis teams, who were almost immediately recognized on the national level. Fergusons mens team ranked as high as fifth in the nation in 1992, earning him Division II South Region Coach-of-the-Year accolades. His womens team finished that same year ranked 10th, helping to earn Ferguson Peach Belt Conference Womens Coach of the Year. Ferguson is married to the former Stephanie Dacus of Greenville, S.C. The Staff Assistant Coach USC-Spartanburg Tami Whitlinger-Jones Volunteer Assistant Coach Stanford Tami Whitlinger-Jones, the wife of Paladin head coach Kelly Jones, is in her first season as the teams volunteer assistant coach. Whitlinger-Jones comes from one of Americas great tennis families, the Whitlingers, from Neenah, Wis. Growing up in a small town Whitlinger-Jones and her twin sister Teri were developed by their grandfather Warren Baba Whitlinger. They trained in a one-court facility that was an old barn converted into an indoor tennis court. With Babas guidance, Whitlinger-Jones became one of the United States best junior players. She won six USTA National Junior titles and was the nations #1 ranked junior in both singles and doubles. She received a full scholarship to play at Stanford, where she played #1 singles and was instrumental in Stanfords back-to-back NCAA Team Championships. After two successful years at Stanford, WhitlingerJones left the collegiate game to pursue her dream of a professional tennis career. Whitlinger-Jones played nine years on the WTA Tour, competing in 38 grand slam tournaments, winning three tour titles, and achieving a ranking as high as #41. Whitlinger-Jones also had several wins over Top 10 players. In 1997, Whitlinger-Jones retired from professional tennis when she became pregnant with her daughter Makenna, now 14 years old. While enjoying motherhood, Tami has continued to stay involved in the game of tennis. She became Director of Tennis for Four Bridges Country Club in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, where she began to focus herself on training and developing junior players. In 2003, Whitlinger-Jones relocated to Tampa, Fla. While in Tampa, she coached privately and trained high-performance junior tennis players. For the past several years Whitlinger-Jones has been helping her husband build their very successful Tennis Family Consulting business. 3
