Origin of the Paladin Furman University athletic teams were known by different names until the 1961 school year. The baseball team was the Hornets, the football team the Hurricane, and the basketball team the Paladins. The basketball team was dubbed the Paladins, a knight on a horse, by a Greenville sportswriter in the 1930s and the name stuck. On September 15, 1961, by a vote of the student body, all Furman athletic teams became known as the Paladins. Covering the Furman Paladins Furman University welcomes coverage of Paladin tennis.
