Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis
2012 America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year
BU prides itself in developing well-rounded student-athletes
who apply themselves in the classroom. In October, the NCAA
announced that the womens tennis team boasted a perfect
Graduation Success Rate (GSR) score of 100. Last summer, seven
Terriers were named to the America East Academic Honor Roll for
having a GPA of 3.0 or higher with Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis
also receiving 2012 America East Womens Tennis Scholar-Athlete
of the Year honors.
When not in the classroom or on the courts, the Terriers
devote much of their time to being active in the
community. Besides raising money for the Dana Farber
Cancer Institute or hosting childrens clinics, the women
also volunteer at the American Cancer Societys Making
Strides against Breast Cancer Walk and in the BU Athletic
Departments holiday reading program.
The BU womens tennis program has established a tradition of success unmatched by
any other in the America East Conference. BU has won 22 team titles, made 13 NCAA
tournament appearances and been nationally ranked in three of the last four years.
After twice advancing to the NCAA
tournament in singles at BU, Lesley
Sheehan was named head coach at her
alma mater in 1985. A four-time America
East Coach of the Year, Sheehan was
named New England Coach of the Year
in 2002 and 2009. Her recruiting skills
have also been recognized with her last
five classes being ranked in the top-20
of the TennisRecruiting.net Mid-Major
Poll with one group ranked 24th overall
in the national poll.
With a former player as the head coach, the Boston University womens tennis team
has continued to be a tight-knit group with strong bonds created between current and
former Terriers. Every fall, alums return for a fun weekend on campus, while many others
make appearances at matches and the NCAA tournament to cheer on the Terriers.
