Race for second place
in WCHA heats up
Four teams jockey for final positioning
W
ith Minnesota clinching the WCHA regular-season championship
last weekend, only three
home playoff spots remain,
and there are four teams vying for them.
It's one of the tightest races for final positioning that
the conference has ever seen.
In years past, first through

third places have usually
been divvied up between
Minnesota, Wisconsin and
Minnesota Duluth. A race
for fourth place would then
be between two teams, with
the top three in a comfortable lead.
This year, however, is a
very different story. Three

Wisconsin and Ohio State, are currently tied for third place. North Dakota jumped into second place last
weekend, but only holds it by two
points.
Each team only has three series
left to play in the regular season,
but with UND having to play against
both Ohio State and Minnesota Duluth, separation amongst the group
of four may not happen until the final
weekend.
Each team's margin for error is
almost nonexistent, which, over the
next three weeks, will create one of
the most entertaining finishes in
WCHA history.
What will it take for home
playoffs?
» If the Badgers can win all six of
their remaining games, it will
guarantee a second- or third-place
finish. The home finale against
Minnesota Duluth could prove to
be one of the deciding factors of
where the Badgers will finish in
the final WCHA standings.
