800 South Tucker Drive Tulsa, Oklahoma 74104-9700 Sulton Family Creates Scholarships for Business Students John and Joyce Sulton Two scholarship endowments have been established for students at the Collins College of Business thanks to the generosity of John and Joyce Sulton, who met at TU in the 1950s and became longtime boosters of the university. John Sulton Jr. (BS '49, marketing) was a war hero before enrolling at TU. As a Navy pilot, he was among the few U.S. World War II veterans to be awarded a distinguished service medal by Russia for providing protection in the North Atlantic for Allied ship convoys. Joyce Sulton joined the TU chapter of Chi Omega Sorority and was a letter winner in cheerleading and TU Homecoming Queen. John was a member of Kappa Alpha. The TU sweethearts were married for 61 years. After graduating, John worked in the oil and gas business, ultimately becoming president of his own enterprise, The Sulton Company, Inc., a successful oilfield supply company, which he operated for 45 years. Joyce and her mother, Helen Jones Riley, were longtime owners of Burnett's Flowers and Gifts Inc. in Tulsa. The Sultons demonstrated their loyalty to their alma mater through several gifts made over a number of years, supporting the TU Annual Fund for the Collins College of Business, The TU Annual Fund, the TU Spirit Squad and the Golden Hurricane Club. Before their deaths, the couple decided to support scholarships in the Collins College of Business, establishing two endowed scholarship funds that are formally recognized as The John and Joyce Sulton Business Scholarship Fund and The John and Joyce Sulton MBA Scholarship Fund. Earnings from the funds will be used to provide need-based scholarships to full-time undergraduates and MBA students.
