The Staff Furman Women's Tennis 2012-13 Christine Johnston Assitant Coach Kentucky, 2010 Christine Johnston is in her second season as an assistant coach with the Furman women's tennis team. Johnston, a native of Columbus, Ohio, was a member of the Kentucky women's tennis team from 2007-2010, when the Wildcats competed in three consecutive NCAA Tournaments (2007-2009). The team finished the 2008 season ranked 22nd nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), then secured a season-ending ranking of 25th in 2009. A two-time All-SEC selection for singles, Johnston was honored with the ITA's Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship and was named to the SEC Community Service team her senior season after leading the Wildcats with a 13-7 (7-3 SEC) record. She and doubles partner Carolina Escamilla concluded the 2008 season ranked 30th nationally and were ranked as high as No. 16 in the 2009 rankings. Johnston was named to the SEC Aca- Jason Garriotte Vol. Assitant Coach Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, 2000 Jason Garriotte is in his fourth season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Furman women's tennis team. He served as the team's assistant coach from 200609, then stepped down to pursue an opportunity with his family's business. Garriotte graduated from Indiana- 4 demic Honor Roll in 2007, 2008, and 2009. "I am excited about the opportunity to add Christine to our staff," said Southern at the time of Johnson's hiring. "She is going to bring a lot of positive energy and enthusiasm to the program, as well as her knowledge of tennis. I look for her to be a good role model for the team." "I'm looking forward to working under Coach Southern and starting my coaching career at a prestigious school like Furman," said Johnston just after her hiring. "This is an exciting opportunity to positively impact the lives of the student athletes that I will be working with, not only by helping them improve their tennis game but also in other areas of their lives. Since I was a Division I tennis player, I can relate well to these athletes and hope to give them the same wonderful memories and experience that I had." After earning earned a degree in Integrated Strategic Communications from Kentucky in 2010, Johnston spent last season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Kentucky women's tennis team. Purdue Fort Wayne with a bachelor of science degree in business in 2000. He played number one singles for the Mastodons during his four-year career, earning all-conference honors all four years of his collegiate career, and a national ranking as high as 65 in 1996. A native of Plymouth, Ind., Garriotte spent time working in the professional business environment before becoming a certified USPTA tennis professional in 2003. He taught in Ohio and Georgia before coming to Furman. Garriotte will help coach at home matches as his schedule permits and hit twice a week with the team. 17 SoCon Regular Season Championships ~ 16 SoCon Tournament Crowns
