INSIDE WRESTLING BY RYAN EVANS @Badger_Wrestle SCHEDULE (5-2, 2-0) Coming Up Dec. 29 Midlands Championships * Dec. 30 Midlands Championships * * at Welsh-Ryan Arena; Evanston, Ill. Hein blossoming under Brandvolds tutelage 197-lb. starter is undefeated in dual meets D uring the Wisconsin wrestling teams earlyseason turnaround, one individual wrestler was engineering a turnaround of his own. Redshirt junior Jackson Hein, the Badgers starter at 197 lbs., is an undefeated 7-0 in dual meet competitions this season, as well as an im- 46 VARSITY D EC E M B E R 20, 2012 pressive 10-2 overall record. Just midway through the season, Hein is already just two wins short of his dual wins total from last season, when the Wausau, Wis., native went 9-8 in duals and 10-12 overall. Hein has helped Wisconsin to a 2-0 start to Big Ten competition. He went 2-0 on the opening weekend of the conference season, defeating Michigan States Nick McDiarmid in a 4-0 decision and Nebraskas Caleb Kolb in a 3-1 sudden victory decision. Wisconsin head coach Barry Davis said after the Badgers win over Northern Iowa on Nov. 24, where Hein won an 8-2 decision over the Panthers A.J. McBroom, that Hein is gaining a better feel for the sport, thanks in part to the work hes put in with assistant coach Trevor Brandvold. Trevor has done a great job with him so far this year, Davis said. Jackson is starting to feel the positions a lot more, which comes from repetition, taking time to visualize his wrestling and building from there. For Hein, emulating Brandvold isnt a bad idea. The Wisconsin assistant coach wrestled for the Badgers from 2006-11 and was a two-time All-American and two-time Big Ten champion at Heins 197 lbs. weight class. If Heins early-season results are any indication, the work with Brandvold is paying off, something Davis is excited about. Jackson is doing a great job, Davis said after the Michigan State dual. Hes off to a good start and I couldnt be happier for him.
